Buyer approval: These figures are proposed targets, not a universal official grading standard. A lot should only be described as meeting this specification after appropriate sampling, testing and inspection. Destination-market rules and the buyer's written requirements take precedence where applicable.

What the specification means

Quality criteria explained

Moisture — maximum 10% target

Moisture affects storage stability and the risk of deterioration. The actual batch should be tested against the agreed specification before shipment.

Purity — minimum 98%

The purchase specification should define how purity is measured and how foreign matter is counted so the buyer and supplier use the same acceptance method.

Foreign matter — maximum 1%

Foreign matter may include sand, stones, stalks, dust and other unwanted material. Cleaning, sorting and representative inspection help assess this requirement.

Broken calyces — maximum 5%

This is a proposed commercial limit. Buyers who intend to grind or extract the material may accept a different proportion if agreed in writing.

Mould and insects

Visible mould and live insects are not permitted under the proposed specification. Visual inspection does not replace microbiological testing where required.

Pesticide residues and microbiological safety

The required tests and acceptance limits depend on the destination market, intended use and buyer. Agree the test panel before the batch is purchased or released.

Quality assurance

Sampling and laboratory testing

A visual check alone cannot confirm food safety or compliance. The sampling plan should represent the actual lot offered for sale, and the agreed laboratory panel should match the intended use and destination.

Tests to discuss with the buyer

Moisture and physical cleanliness

Checks moisture content and the presence of foreign material.

Total ash and acid-insoluble ash

May help assess inorganic residue and contamination such as excessive sand.

Microbiology

May include total plate count, yeast and mould, Salmonella and E. coli, according to buyer requirements.

Pesticide residues

Must be assessed against the applicable limits for the destination market.

Heavy metals and relevant mycotoxins

Test where required by the buyer, destination rules or risk assessment.

Suggested approval workflow

  1. 1Identify and segregate the specific supplier lot.
  2. 2Collect a representative sample using an appropriate sampling procedure.
  3. 3Submit the agreed test panel to a laboratory whose accreditation scope covers the relevant tests.
  4. 4Compare measured results with the written specification and destination requirements.
  5. 5Inspect the approved stock, packaging and shipment condition before release.

A COA is only meaningful for the sample and lot it represents. Retesting may be needed if stock is reprocessed, blended, repacked or stored in conditions that could affect quality.

Packing & quantities

25 kg net-weight bags

The proposed standard is 25 kg of product net weight per bag, excluding the bag itself. Final bag material, liner, labelling and palletisation should be agreed with the buyer and confirmed for the destination.

1 tonne40
10 tonnes400
25 tonnes1,000
100 tonnes4,000
